Our History

Casa do Menor was founded in 1986 by an Italian missionary, Father Renato Chiera, who, witnessing the climate of violence and death of the Rio de Janeiro’s suburbs, decided to live aside his philosophy books and to start helping all the abandoned, unloved and assassinated children of Brazil.

This is a story that began over 30 years ago and that, has been characterized by the daily violence of Brazil, by the figure of the Catholic Church, by the support of the local community, of the Brazilian government, of philanthropic organizations and of volunteers from all over the world.
